How To Clean Leather

Leather is a beautiful, warm compliment to the atmosphere of any home. Its versatility and soft suppleness make it functional and luxurious for clothing, accessories and auto interiors. Caring for and extending the life of your leather requires preventative maintenance with quality leather-care products:

General Tips

  • Use a premium, high-quality leather cleaner and conditioner to keep leather clean and maintain its natural sheen

  • Clean and condition leather regularly to keep it from drying out.Weiman Leather Wipes are perfect for cleaning and quickly rejuvenating the surface

  • To protect leather from harmful UV rays, use products that contain sunscreen to prevent fading, drying and cracking. Leather must be protected from ultraviolet light just like human skin

  • Avoid using cleaning fluid, shoe cream, saddle soap or mink oil as these products may contain ingredients that damage leather

  • Avoid spraying household fragrances near leather or applying hair sprays or perfumes while wearing leather

  • Never use adhesives or tape on leather

  • If leather becomes wet, allow it to air dry at room temperature. Never use intense heat or artificial heat (i.e. hair dryer, clothes dryer) to accelerate drying

  • Be mindful of colors and dyes used in leather. The manufacturer should provide instructions on how to clean and treat dyed/colored leather surfaces

  • Leather furniture should be cleaned regularly to remove lint, pet hair and other residue that causes discoloration over time

  • Keep leather at least 1 foot away from radiators and heating vents to prevent it from drying out

  • Do not leave printed items such as newspapers or magazines on leather as the inks may bleed onto the surface

  • For oil-based stains such as grease or makeup, blot away excess soil with a clean, dry cloth. Do not wipe so as not to spread the stain. Consult the manufacturer or a professional for additional cleaning instructions

  • Before cleaning leather, always test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area before use

  • Do not use Weiman Leather Care products on suede, nubuck, Natuzzi® brand or any unfinished leather surface

  • For stains that appear too difficult to treat, consult the manufacturer or a leather care professional for cleaning instructions

Quick Tips

  • To remove chewing gum, put ice cubes in a plastic bag and apply the bag to the gum. Wait several minutes, lift the ice bag and then carefully scrape the gum from the surface.
  • To clean off butter, oil or grease, blot away the excess butter, oil or grease with a clean dry cloth. Don't wipe so as not to spread the stain. Leave the spot alone as the stain should dissipate into the leather. Do not apply water to wash off the butter, oil or grease.
